S.A.L.S.A. (Spanish American Lancaster Youth Association) was formed in 1999 by Sindo Lopez and Dennis Walker, among others that no longer serve on the board of directors. They are the only organization that offers baseball in the city for inner city youth. How far S.A.L.S.A. has come is not only measured in numbers of kids, but by the kids themselves. It's obvious that baseball isn't the only thing being taught by their coaches. This program was formed to get kids off the streets and onto the base paths. *
A non-Baltimore group was chosen because Lancaster, PA is where the Director was born and raised before moving to Baltimore. S.A.L.S.A.'s focus is baseball. LTA will be running a 2 hour baseball clinic with semi-professional instruction. There will then be a party following. We have a sponsor for this program in Mercantile Bank and Trust, which has enabled us to produce t-shirts for everyone involved and retain former Orioles' pitcher, Dave Johnson. Dave will be in the youth center to work with the kids and sign autographs.
